Political Engagement at The Home Depot

The Home Depot recognizes that legislative and regulatory actions of public policymakers impact our business, our associates and our communities. Therefore, the company has a responsibility to participate in the political process and encourages our associates to do so, as well.

We engage in three key ways:
  • Effective advocacy, relationship building and political activity aimed to optimize the government’s impact on our business.

  • An employee-funded political action committee (PAC) that connects our salaried associates to the political process and pools their voluntary contributions to financially support candidates on both sides of the aisle who understand issues important to The Home Depot.

  • Support for trade associations and other organizations that advocate on behalf of the business and our associates.

Orange bar with the title Five facts about The Home Depot PAC

1. The Home Depot PAC is focused on issues central to our business.

Contributions from The Home Depot PAC are given to legislators who understand and promote business-critical issues such as:

  • Creating Economic Growth by making sure we have a say in laws that create jobs, support a healthy housing market, and affect flexibility and career growth for associates.

  • Supporting a Strong Supply Chain by advocating for funding for roads, bridges and efficient ports.

  • Encouraging Fair Competition by promoting a level playing field for all retailers to follow the same rules on taxation, accountability and transparency.

  • Combating Retail Theft by supporting the passage of laws across the country to fight organized retail crime, which not only is a safety issue for all retailers, but also feeds other crimes in our neighborhoods.

  • Building Strong Private-Public Partnerships to support communities during natural disasters and other times of need.

2. The Home Depot PAC’s giving is bipartisan.

The PAC gives to legislators, candidates and leadership PACs on both sides of the aisle at the local, state and federal level based on business issues that are important to The Home Depot. Home Depot associates can designate if they want their money to support Republicans or Democrats when signing up for the PAC. We may not agree with every position taken by a candidate or elected official, and a contribution to an individual should not be taken to mean agreement with every position taken by such individual. However, we use these criteria and our Core Values to make decisions that allow us to have a seat at the table to engage, both on the issues on which we align and those we disagree, to support our business, associates, and communities.

3. The Home Depot PAC does not donate to presidential candidates or presidential campaigns.

As a longstanding practice, we do not support or endorse presidential candidates.

4. The Home Depot PAC Is Employee-Funded.

  • The PAC is funded by individual Home Depot associates, who can choose to direct their money to Democrats or Republicans.

  • The PAC is funded by voluntary, small-dollar contributions from our salaried associates. In 2021, nearly 50% of salaried associates contributed to the PAC, and the average contribution was $5 per paycheck.

5. The average PAC donation is about $2,500.

The Home Depot PAC gives to candidates and lawmakers at local, state and federal levels. All Home Depot PAC contributions are public and can be viewed on the Federal Election Commission’s website. The Home Depot’s political activity policy can be found here.

In addition, The Home Depot encourages all associates to get involved by making their voices heard. We have a website, www.HomeDepotVotes.com, where associates and their families can register to vote, learn about the candidates on their ballots, and sign up to be poll workers. Change happens at the polls, and all associates are encouraged to make a plan and vote.

Details about this engagement can be found in the ESG Report and in the Political Activity and Government Relations Policy.
