Uniting the Community for a Birthday Party in 24 Hours

June 03, 2015

It was the night before the party when the phone rang. When Lori at store #6002 in Cheyenne, Wyo. answered, it wasn’t the customer call she expected. On the line, a local elementary school teacher expressed her worry that Jacob, one of her students with special needs, may not have any kids coming to his birthday party at the store.

“Apparently it was the school’s spring break, and none of the kids had RSVP’d to Jacob’s birthday celebration,” said Lori. “After hanging up with his teacher, I knew I had to do as much as I could to make sure his party at the store the next day was a success.”

So Lori took to social media to gather ideas and picked up the phone to reach out to the community. Within 24 hours, Lori pulled together a full event and crowd for the celebration with a guest list including the local fire department, police department, associates from three Home Depot stores and other members of the community who wanted to be there to celebrate Jacob.

“We were completely blown away that the team at Home Depot pulled this party together,” said Cheryl, Jacob’s mother. “We’re a military family who is always moving around, so it was wonderful to feel like a part of the community and have everyone’s support for Jacob’s special day.”
