Home Today, Home Tomorrow: A Unique Design Partnership

July 27, 2016

Many older adults want to stay in their homes as they age, but all too often those homes can no longer accommodate their changing needs.

That’s why The Home Depot Foundation is joining forces with Home Matters, AARP, AARP Foundation and Wells Fargo to create new design solutions for seniors. The Home Today, Home Tomorrow design competition is bringing together architects and designers to innovate today’s standards in housing design so that seniors can stay safely in their homes as they age.

A nationwide call-for-entries brought incredible ideas to the table and one winning design was selected to come to life through the partnership, which will be incorporated into a real home in Memphis, Tenn. “With 10,000 Americans turning 65 each day, this competition is a wake-up call that we need better solutions that allow people to have more control over how and where they live,” said Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO of AARP.

Once the changes are complete, the renovated home will be awarded to a veteran family in which at least one family member will be an individual of 50 years of age or older. The design will also serve as a guide to help millions of Americans develop plans for their homes to meet their needs, regardless of age or income.
