A Legacy Restored: How The Home Depot Foundation Transformed a Historic Home for a Military Family

March 21, 2025

With help from The Home Depot Foundation and HouseProud Atlanta, Army veteran Leonard is fulfilling a promise to his late grandmother: to restore their 1934 family home to its former glory—just in time to welcome his son back from deployment.

Leonard inherited the home from his grandmother, the wife of a World War II veteran. When financial setbacks halted progress, leaving the house in disrepair, The Home Depot Foundation and HouseProud stepped in with the support and resources needed to complete the renovations.

The newly restored home is a symbol of dedication and family legacy. Leonard, his mother Ardath—an Air Force veteran—and his children represent four generations of military service, a legacy started by Leonard’s grandfather. They’ve recently reunited to celebrate in the home that has been part of their history for over 60 years, and to further honor their family's service, The Home Depot Foundation has paid off the mortgage.

The family’s legacy is one of service and resilience. Shirley and Benjamin Kelley, both Georgia natives, invested in two homes in Atlanta's West End neighborhood during the 1960s and 70s. Benjamin was not only a World War II veteran, but he was also a trailblazer in his community. This home dedication is part of The Home Depot Foundation’s ongoing commitment to veterans. Since 2011, the Foundation has invested more than $550 million in veteran causes, with a pledge to reach $750 million by 2030. To learn more, visit HomeDepotFoundation.org.
