Technology has changed the way we interact with our homes. Wish it were cooler? Ask Google to turn up the AC on your thermostat. Worried who’s at the door? Open up the Ring app on your smart phone to find out. What used to be a thing of science fiction is now our reality.

But how did we get here? Historians trace the evolution of the smart home to the early 1990s, when electric appliances revolutionized how household chores got done. But the advances emerging today really began with consumer use of the internet, so that’s where we’ll start.
