Spring is the season for a fresh start and that includes your yard. Whether you're firing up the grill or powering through lawn care, having the right tools for the job helps to make the task more efficient.
The Home Depot’s senior merchant of grills, Andrew Shaver, and merchant of outdoor power equipment, Abby Cranford share their favorite new products in outdoor tools.
What are some of the most exciting new products or innovations in your category this spring?
Andrew Shaver: This year is big for grilling. We’re seeing the first major update to the Weber Spirit line in more than six years. The Home Depot has two exclusive 4-burner models featuring Weber Works-compatible side tables and a griddle insert.
We’ve also launched the new Traeger Woodridge series with three models. Some of the features include larger cooking surfaces, an easy-clean ash and keg system, bigger hoppers for longer cooks, and full accessory compatibility. And for those new to griddling, Nexgrill introduced two new models—a 2-burner and a 4-burner—both with generous cooking surfaces, hinged lids, and foldable side tables.
Abby Cranford: I’m really excited about the Cub Cadet 42-inch Zero Turn with IntelliPower—it’s a powerhouse for hilly or complex yards. And for those looking to ditch gas, the new Ryobi 549 cordless 40V mower delivers true gas-like performance.
How are these new products helping customers get more out of their outdoor spaces?
Andrew Shaver: The Weber line is perfect for versatile outdoor cooking, The Woodridge series offers more value at equal or even lower price points than the models they replace, and Nexgrill is a great value for anyone ready to join the griddle game.
Abby Cranford: These products are a game-changer for loyal gas users ready to switch to battery power without sacrificing performance.
Can you share a surprising or little-known fact about your category that customers might find interesting?
Andrew Shaver: More than 75% of U.S. households own a grill or smoker—it’s the third most-owned cooking appliance after the microwave and oven. That’s a lot of backyard chefs!
Abby Cranford: Zero Turn Riders can cut up to 70% faster than traditional riding mowers and are much better at maneuvering around obstacles. If you’ve got a tricky yard, they’re a smart investment.
What does a typical day look like for you during the busy spring season?
Andrew Shaver: Every day is different, which is what makes the merchant role so exciting. We are constantly challenged to solve problems, think critically, and deliver results. As a merchant, we get to work with many internal cross functional groups, build relationships with our suppliers, support our stores and field teams.
Abby Cranford: I’m up before my kids to get a head start on the day. After breakfast and school drop-off, I’m in the office checking emails and jumping into meetings. Spring is our busiest season—we’re constantly reviewing in-stocks, sales, and planning for the next season. After work, it's family time and maybe a little quiet time to catch up on emails or a show before bed.
What motivates you in your role, and what makes working at The Home Depot meaningful to you?
Andrew Shaver: For more than a decade I’ve been inspired by the impact we have on customers’ lives. I’ve been in different roles but most recently indoor garden and grills. So many people have a grill or smoker at their home, so whether it’s helping someone find the perfect tools for their first backyard barbecue or guiding someone with their upgrade decision, it’s rewarding.
Abby Cranford: Honestly, I can’t imagine working anywhere else. The Home Depot has invested in me and my family in ways I never expected. The culture here is incredible—smart, supportive, and generous people who lift each other up. Even on tough days, I’m grateful to be part of this team.
