A Father's Day Surprise for a Special Veteran and His Family

June 15, 2015

When Bo’s father Don beams with pride talking about all his son has accomplished—Navy Seal, third- generation contractor, loving father—you’d never guess that Bo has had to overcome a life-altering injury.

Bo was critically injured after stepping on an IED while on foot patrol in Afghanistan in 2012. Though he lost both of his legs, he came home to a family support system that would help him become stronger than he ever imagined.

The family has always been close—with a family-owned contracting company, they spend their days building together. But, through Bo’s recovery, their bond grew. Don moved to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for six months during Bo’s rehabilitation, and Bo’s son Landon played a major motivational role in his recovery.

Now that Bo is recovered and back in Montana, the family continues to bond over building as Don leads the construction of Bo’s new home. The build is a part of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Building for America’s Bravest program, and Don is the lead contractor for creating a custom home for Bo that will fit his family’s unique long-term needs.

As the new home nears completion, Team Depot volunteers from across the state of Montana joined forces with Don to make this Father’s Day extra special for Bo. The team surprised Bo with a fully stocked workshop for his handyman and contractor projects—complete with every tool Bo would ever need, as well as a new work bench for his son to learn the tricks of the trade. Team Depot also built a playground and landscaped the property to help the family get settled in their new home.

The nearly finished home and workshop now sit perched on top of a mountain in Montana awaiting Bo and his family to move in and fill it with family memories and building projects for years to come.
