House fires have changed. It used to take up to 30 minutes for a fire to take over a room in a house. These days, it can take less than five.
We went behind-the-scenes for a virtual reality, 360° video shoot featuring a house fire in action.
The Nest team behind the shoot wanted to produce a video that would demonstrate how quickly a fire can take over, and how tools like the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm can help people protect their homes.
The video shoot took place under the supervision of the Dekalb County Fire Department at their Fire Rescue Training Academy in Georgia.
The team placed a 360 camera in the middle of the facility’s “burn building” to simulate a real house fire. The burn building is typically reserved for training and is used up to seven days a week to test new gear, train new recruits and refresh seasoned firefighters on various techniques.
Often, the building is used to help new recruits get used to the sensation of being inside a burning building before they experience it in the field.
It’s not often you see a firefighter setting a building ablaze, but in this case: it’s a critical part of their training.
According to the Dekalb Fire Department, they were more than happy to help the Nest team with the VR shoot to help educate others about the serious dangers of house fires.
