5 Holiday Décor Tips from Martha Stewart

November 20, 2015

Martha Stewart Living recently teamed up with The Home Depot for a holiday workshop in New York City. The event was the first of its kind to be live-streamed on Facebook and featured Martha and her co-host, Kevin Sharkey, demonstrating projects to help make your home beautiful for the Christmas holiday. While there, we gathered some of Martha’s best tips for overall holiday decorating success.

1. Recharge Your Batteries Before You Get Started

You may not realize it but Martha uses a lot of power tools—including the RYOBI cordless drill and variable speed jig saw. She encourages everyone to always charge the batteries before starting a new project, to avoid surprises or delays.

Ornaments 2. Fluff Your Artificial Wreaths and Trees

Many families decorate their home with artificial wreaths and trees for convenience and easier cleanup. Make sure you fluff out the artificial leaves for a more natural and authentic look. If you’re still looking for the perfect artificial tree, check out our video to learn tips from a pro.

3. Match Your Scissors to the Material

According to Martha, it’s important to have dedicated scissors for everything – paper, fabric and wire. She even labels each of her scissors to easily know which ones to grab for the project at hand. Having the correct specialized scissors comes in handy, since regular scissors can often ruin ribbons and other delicate fabrics used in decor.

4. Make Your Tree Topple-Proof

Here’s a great way to make any Christmas tree pet and wobble-proof: Simply wrap wire to the top of the tree and hook it on to a doorframe for a sturdy hold. Martha is a big believer that the more stuff on the tree, the better, so secure that tree before piling on all the décor.

 5. Experiment with New Colors

Be adventurous in your décor planning and try a new color theme this year. From silver and gold to reds and blues, new colors will look great and keeps things fresh and interesting.
