HOW TO NAVIGATE NEW WATER HEATER REGULATIONS

May 18, 2015

The U.S. Department of Energy is always working to find ways to help you save energy, and with their new residential water heater regulations going into effect this year, you’ll be able help the environment and enjoy more financial savings. The guidelines will make units more efficient, but it will also impact unit size.

Originally announced in 2010, these new residential water heater mandates are expected to result in $63 billion in energy bill savingsfor products shipped over the next 29 years. While this doesn’t directly influence your current water heater, or what’s available in stores, it does mean all newly manufactured units must abide by certain energy efficiency guidelines.

How does this impact you?

  • When it’s time for you to replace your water heater, new units could be heavier, larger and may even cost more.
  • If your water heater is less than 55 gallons, you can expect a new, compliant unit to be at least two inches taller and wider—and in some cases increase as much as six to eight inches in dimension.
  • These bigger units will require more area in the home, which may be an issue when utility space is limited.
