Setting Our Sights on a Sustainable Future: 2015 Sustainability Report

December 29, 2015

As the world’s largest home improvement retailer, we understand that the best build and remodeling projects are the ones built sustainably. The Home Depot has a longstanding commitment to holding ourselves, our suppliers and our business partners accountable for sustainable business practices – from our environmental impact and sourcing to the products we sell and our involvement within the communities in which we do business.

In 2010, we set a five year goal to reduce our stores’ energy use by 20 percent. Today, we are happy to report that we not only met that goal in 2014, but exceeded it, reducing store energy use by more than 30 percent. That’s a savings of more than eight billion kilowatts in ten years.

We also set our sights on a 20 percent reduction in supply chain carbon emissions over 2008 levels by 2015. At the end of 2014, we had achieved a 35 percent reduction, eliminating more than one million metric tons of carbon emissions over five years.

2010 goals

Now, we are announcing new 2020 goals focused on striving for energy efficiency in our stores and the production of renewable and alternative energy.

2020 Goals

Whether through the products we sell that help our customers save energy and have a healthier home or through the ways we continue to reduce our environmental impact, we strive to do what’s “right.”
