Recycled content and landfill diversion were hot topics at this year’s Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago. Whether it’s pre- or post-consumer recycled content, manufacturers are looking for new ways of designing and producing products to extend their lifecycles and reduce waste.
Take a look at some of the recycled content players sold at The Home Depot and featured in this year’s tradeshow:
Knauf Insulation
Each month, Knauf Insulation uses about 26 million glass bottles collected at curbside to manufacture its insulation products. And, all of its products are made with a minimum of 50 percent post-consumer recycled glass content. Knauf utilizes ECOSE technology, a proprietary manufacturing process that uses rapidly renewable bio-based materials rather than commonly used non-renewable petroleum-based chemicals such as formaldehyde and acrylics.
Trex Recycled Decking
Trex decking is made with more than 95 percent recycled wood and plastic – including plastic film from Home Depot stores. Not only is the product beautiful, but Trex is backed by 25-year residential warranty and is fade, stain, scratch and mold resistant.
Andersen Windows & Doors
Andersen 100 Series windows and patio doors are made with environmentally responsible and durable Fibrex composite material. Made with 40 percent reclaimed wood fiber by weight, most of which is created during the process of manufacturing Andersen wood windows, Fibrex is twice as strong as vinyl and blocks thermal transfer nearly 700 times better than aluminum to help save energy and reduce heating and cooling costs.
Shaw Floors
Shaw Industries was recently named The Home Depot’s 2018 Environmental Partner of the Year and for good reason. Almost all of Shaw’s polyester carpets contain post-consumer recycled content. In 2017 alone, Shaw used more than 3.5 billion plastic bottles in the manufacturing of its carpet. Since 2006, Shaw has reclaimed and recycled nearly 1 billion pounds of post-consumer carpet – theirs and other manufacturers’.
