Caitlin Ketcham is a Tucson-based graphic designer who is working on turning her semi-custom house into her dream home, project by project. From the front yard to the backyard, Caitlin had the opportunity give her entire outdoor space a makeover during this year’s Patio Style Challenge with a Hampton Bay Tobago Patio Setand Lynnfield Patio Chat Set.
We talked to the Desert Domicile author to get a sense of her décor style and hear lessons learned during the challenge. Check out her responses and go behind-the-scenes with photos below.
What sparked your passion for decor?
I really love making spaces my own. Even though I was able to choose all of the finishing touches for our home, it was a big blank slate when we moved in. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it.
What made you decide to share your ideas and projects through blogging?
I started blogging when we lived in our old condo. I had no idea to decorate it so I used it to test out design ideas until we sold it and built a house. When we moved into our new house, I started seriously blogging so I could track the progress I was making on turning our first house into a home.
What lessons have you learned during this challenge?
I’ve learned that sometimes plans have to change due to unforeseen reasons. We really wanted to add a paver pathway to our side yard but we learned that the pavers would come unleveled over time due to poor water drainage in that area. We compromised and made a dry riverbed out of Mexican beach pebbles and pea gravel.
What are 3 tips you might give to others trying to design their patio?
- Think about how you want to use the space (for dining, lounging, entertaining, etc.).
- Be sure to space plan ahead of time.
- Make sure your designs reflect your style and personality.
