A military wife with a knack for design, Chelsea Coulston specializes in sharing ways to decorate a home that may have limitations—like rental units—in her blog, Making Home Base. 
In this year’s Home Depot Patio Style Challenge, Chelsea shares how to turn an intimate, small space into the perfect spot to relax during warm weather months. With a set of Brown Jordan Form Patio Motion Lounge Chairs and a few brightly colored plants, she was able to truly transform the space.
We talked with Chelsea for the inside scoop on her design inspiration and new patio.
What sparked your passion for decor?
I’m pretty sure it’s in my blood. I remember always watching home décor shows growing up and loving how they would transform a space on a budget. After I got married, I was determined to make our first home something unique and stylish—and I’ve been trying to do that with every house since.
What are you working on for The Home Depot Patio Style Challenge?
I just finished up my patio for The Home Depot Patio Style Challenge. My final project was this great concrete plant pedestal, and during the project I learned that furnishing a small patio is tricky, but not impossible.
What are 3 tips you might give to others trying to design their patio?
- Just get started. We waited two years to finally give our patio the attention it deserved. Now I see us spending time out there every day.
- Work with what you have. I had a lot of flowerpots sitting in my garage. It was time for them to get some use!
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The folks at my local Home Depot are amazing. I go in with an idea and always come out with everything I need to make it happen.
Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?
My best advice for aspiring bloggers is to jump in. Blogging is the most fun I’ve had “working” in my life. And, the connections with other bloggers are truly priceless.
