Maker Moment: A Crowdsourced 3D Printing Masterpiece

March 08, 2016

Todd Blatt is a professional maker hoping to encourage others to work on new, innovative projects they’ve never tried before. His group, We the Builders, makes it easy for those interested in the maker movement to take action and become part of a global project. As a mechanical engineer, Todd’s passion is working with 3D printers and laser cutters.

We the Builders began when Todd’s team decided to build a full-scale replica of a prominent work of Baltimore art using 3D printed parts. It was a large undertaking, so the group decided to crowdsource the work. Anyone interested (and with access to a 3D printer) could sign up and receive a piece to print. Once all the parts were mailed in, the ultimate puzzle-style challenge was set in motion, and Todd and his team worked together to assemble all of the pieces into a new type of art.

Since embarking on this first project, the team has continued to facilitate and build replicas—with people around the world collaborating to bring new artworks to life. Recent pieces include busts of Benjamin Franklin and Edgar Allen Poe.

We had the opportunity to see the designs at the New York World Makers Faire. Check out the video below to learn more about the maker movement and We the Builders from Todd Blatt.
