Martha Stewart is starting the holiday season right by hosting her first live-streamed Home Depot workshop, where she’ll showcase her favorite holiday DIY projects. In our excitement for the upcoming event, we sat down with Hannah Milman, Senior Vice President and Executive Editorial Editor of Crafts and Holiday for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, to hear about the latest trends in holiday decorating and crafts this season.
What are some of the most popular trends in indoor holiday decorating this year?
Bringing holiday lighting indoors is a trend that’s growing in a huge way. You can use string lights for so many things you may not have thought of, such a lighting a winter village on your mantel, making lighted holiday jars with ornaments and creating centerpieces with battery-operated LED lights. These are great ways to make your holiday decorating really luminous and beautiful.
Do you think the trend of creating your own holiday decorations and DIY crafts is growing?
Yes, people love to make their own things, and using DIY decorations with traditional pieces is really gaining traction. All you need is a hardware store, like The Home Depot, and some imagination, and you’ve got everything you need to make something unique. Lots of seasonal crafts have easy-to-follow instructions, so there are always ways to make the crafts your own. For example, our lighted holiday sign project is easy to customize—just use whatever words, board shapes, paint colors, and lights you like.
Are there any colors other than the traditional reds or greens that are popular in holiday decorating or crafts this season?
Absolutely. A color we’re seeing a lot this year is mint green, and especially mint green mixed with metallics. Our Frosted Traditions collection features beautiful turquoise and metallic accents that create a mint look, which is very popular in fashion and decorations right now.
How can you use traditional decorations in unique ways for holiday DIY projects?
There are lots of fun, creative ways to use ornaments besides just hanging them on your tree. I love the shatter-resistant ornaments we have at The Home Depot because they’re so versatile and can be used in a variety of holiday crafting projects. You can buy an extra tub of ornaments and use them to decorate a mirror to hang above the mantel. I also love to make little ornament clusters and drape them on garland, or even attach them to wrapped gifts. You could never do that safely with breakable ornaments!
What are some good holiday craft ideas for the whole family?
There’s nothing like making cookies and gingerbread houses during the holidays. Gingerbread decorations are also great to mix with traditional ornaments on your tree. The kids can help decorate the gingerbread, and adding the cookies to the tree adds another holiday fragrance to the house—especially if you have an artificial tree.
But one of the best things you can do with the family is crafting for the community. This is the perfect time to get together and make projects and gifts for nursing homes, community centers, or shelters, and it’s a meaningful way to give back
