How Homeowners Are Making Haunted Houses a Reality This Halloween

October 15, 2015

Halloween is fast approaching and more than 157 million Americans are planning to partake in the fright fest this year. Almost 45% of those celebrating are decorating their home and yard. Buying a pumpkin is simply not enough when there are hundreds of spooky, classic and scream-worthy items on shelves to transform the home. Investment on these decorations is anticipated to reach almost $1.9 billion this year.

Plans for Adults and Kids Alike

Halloween has changed in recent years, transitioning from a traditional kids-only holiday, to an adult holiday as well. Families are decorating both indoor and outdoor, making Halloween the second largest decorating holiday behind Christmas. We’re answering the high demand with hundreds of new products—from home décor to Halloween technology. Since 2012, Home Depot has seen product footprint and sales increase by 100% each year says Kelie Charles, The Home Depot’s holiday merchant. This year, we will offer 120 Halloween items in store with more than 650 available online.

Weekend Celebrations

With the holiday on a Saturday this year, children can trick-or-treat earlier in the evening when the sun is still up, and adults can celebrate into the night without work looming the following day. People also decorate differently when Halloween is on the weekend. “We’re expecting a big year and adjusted our product selection with more décor, in anticipation of the Halloween parties everyone will be throwing,” explains Kelie.

A Cohesive Theme

With hues dubbed “Goblins Brew Green” and “Witches Broom Yellow,” design enthusiasts are expanding beyond the common black and orange palette and weaving more colors throughout their entire home. This year, we’re making it easy to pull a palette together with products based on a collection of colors. For example, you can pick up a plant for the porch with greens based on the “Goblin Brew Green” that match the hues in your tinsel witch décor in the yard and your animated Wicked Witch of the West in the entryway.

How are you celebrating Halloween this year? If you’re one of the 70+ million planning to decorate your home, you now have plenty of options for welcoming guests and trick-or-treaters to your front step.
