As a part of our ongoing support of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, The Home Depot Foundation is supporting Scarecrows in the Garden this October. The exhibit brings a festive harvest display of nearly 100 scarecrows handcrafted by businesses, individuals, schools and organizations to this iconic Atlanta landmark to celebrate the season.
“The Home Depot recognizes the quality of life and environmental stewardship benefits the Atlanta Botanical Garden brings to our community,” said Carol Tomé, The Home Depot’s chief financial officer and board of trustees member at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. “Additionally, the Garden ties in nicely with The Home Depot’s outdoor, DIY garden mentality. Our fall décor and garden items coupled with the expertise of our associates help guide our customers to make their own home masterpieces similar to those throughout the Garden each season.”
Inspired by our do-it-herself customers, The Home Depot Trend and Design team joined forces with store associates to build our own addition to the Scarecrow in the Garden event – a scarecrow named Dolly DIY.
To bring Dolly DIY to life, the Trend and Design team, store manager Ann-Marie Lieberman and associate Danny Watson started by brainstorming Dolly DIY’s storyline and style to determine her personality, build and stance. The group then carefully thought through materials and building logistics to ensure the scarecrow’s construction would remain stable and endure the elements of the garden while on display. Then, they called on Ron Humphries, the go-to guy for building projects in the store to determine the right foundation and skeleton needed and build the scarecrow’s base.
Once the wooden foundation was in place, it was time for the Trend and Design team to get crafty. Playing with fall textures and colors, such as burlap and corn husk, the team got to work shaping and designing every inch of Dolly DIY.
