Today, as The Home Depot Foundation’s seventh annual Celebration of Service program concludes, thousands of associates filled the lawn of the company’s Store Support Center to celebrate Veterans Day in the company’s hometown of Atlanta.
Volunteers constructed more than 400 pieces of furniture, including dressers and tables, for formerly homeless veterans to help them fully settle into their homes.
More than 3,000 messages were inscribed on 2x4 studs – messages that will live forever in the walls of two Habitat for Humanity homes for local veteran families.
Navy veteran Tiffany watched as the company’s executive leadership team built a playhouse for her children, 9-year-old Ponciano and 10-year-old Elena. They are one of nine veteran families who will have a custom playhouse delivered this afternoon.
“When you do something for me it’s one thing. But when you do it for my kids, I’m left speechless,” Tiffany said. “I struggle with handling my [traumatic brain injury], but this… this is healing for me.”
To continue supporting communities impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, 3,500 personal care kits were assembled with HeroBox, an organization that supports veterans through physical and moral support.
