Supply Chain Unveils First Flatbed Distribution Center (FDC)

January 28, 2020

It’s one thing to deliver a simple package the next day, or even the same day, but imagine a flatbed of 80-pound bags of concrete, concrete blocks, a bunk of lumber and then throw in some drywall to get the project done. That’s the type of orders that will be fulfilled from one of The Home Depot’s newest types of distribution centers called a “Flatbed Distribution Center” (FDC).

An FDC is one of several new types of delivery centers that are part of the company’s $1.2 billion investment to build approximately 150 new facilities across the country to reach 90 percent of U.S. customers with same-day and next-day delivery. Easy enough for some, but it takes quite a bit more creativity and innovation when you’re delivering everything from a power drill to roofing shingles.

The Home Depot opened its first FDC in Dallas as part of that commitment. This opening will deliver construction and building materials directly to the customer. This will increase the accessibility and speed of deliveries.

“We expect to build 40 flatbed distribution centers in the 40 largest markets, so we can bring those products to customers on a same-day, next-day basis,” says Executive Vice President of Supply Chain & Product Development Mark Holifield. “Our flatbed distribution centers help us provide the tools and materials Pros need for their jobs on a same day, next day basis, where and when they need it.”

The FDCs are one more way The Home Depot is helping doers get more done.
