As kids in Lufkin, Texas chug along through Ellen Trout Zoo and across Ellen Trout Lake, they’re not focused on the impact the iconic train has on the community. They’re just soaking up the sites and enjoying the ride.
But, this railroad line has longstanding track record for community impact. The attraction is managed by the local Lions Club and proceeds from the $2 ride benefit local charitable organizations and fund public recreational spots, like community pavilions.

an favorite among zoo visitors on a daily basis and gets its fair share of wear and tear. With all of its use, the ride’s 10-year-old wooden seats were starting to cause some problems.
That’s where store manager Brian Rosencranz of store #0153 in Lufkin stepped in. Brian is a member of the local Lions Club and knew his team of associates could help refurbish the train without taking the ride out of commission for a day.
“Last time they fixed the seats, it took them two days to finish the work,” said Brian. “It’s springtime – a prime time for zoo trips and train rides – and I knew I had enough talent in associates at my store to get it done quickly and well.”
After the cutting and staining was done, the team removed the seats and installed the new ones in no time. The train was back in action in two hours – repaired and splinter-free.
“Our associates, including myself, have taken our kids on this train for years,” said Brian. “It’s great to know that not only is my son’s favorite thing to do at the zoo repaired, but it will continue to be an engine for giving back to the community for years to come.”
