Housing Assistance Council

Founded in 1971, the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with headquarters in Washington, DC. Regional offices are in Georgia, Missouri, New Mexico, and California.

The only national housing and community development intermediary devoting all its resources to rural America, HAC is not a membership organization and works with all.

While working in every state and several territories, wherever rural need is found, HAC also has a special focus on the most underserved, highest need groups and regions, including Appalachia, the border colonias, the Mississippi Delta and Southeast, Indian country, and farmworker areas.

The Home Depot Foundation has very generously supported HAC's work with rural veterans. That work includes extensive data analysis and publication of a detailed report on rural veterans and their housing needs; loans and grants made to support affordable housing projects for such veterans; other grants vetted and recommended to the Foundation; training conferences in Iowa, Arizona and D.C.; a Capitol Hill symposium on rural veterans; other publications; and other work.

All of this activity is focused on developing, preserving, or repairing affordable homes for low- and moderate-income rural veterans, and on raising veterans' issues in the rural housing community. HAC is also focused on all affordable housing for veterans -- the homeless and near homeless, seniors, homeowners needing repairs, homeowners facing eviction, potential homeowners, and all kinds of renters.

Founded in 2008, SVA is a national coalition of student veterans organizations, known as SVA chapters, on more than 1,000 college and university campuses in all 50 states and 3 countries overseas. Chapters are also catalysts for positive change – often advocating for veteran-friendly policies and bridging the civilian-military divide.

The Home Depot Foundation’s support has enabled SVA chapters to build or refurbish on-campus Veteran Resource Centers that serve a school’s entire veteran population. These centers are recognized as a best practice for improving student veteran success. Typically, they serve as SVA chapter meeting locations, study halls, group counseling centers, offices for centralizing on-campus veteran resources, and “safe spaces” that foster greater interactions between student veterans.

The Home Depot Foundation’s investment in Team Rubicon is being used to help the organization increase its U.S. domestic disaster response capabilities. In addition, Team Depot and Team Rubicon pool their resources of highly qualified volunteers to respond to local disasters.
