This Mother’s Day, say thanks to mom with beautiful flowers or a cool plant, all while being responsible for Mother Earth. Your local Home Depot has items that are regionally sourced from companies that practice sustainable growing and eco-friendly gardening.
Bell Nursery, an exclusive supplier to The Home Depot since 1996, grows and supplies flowers and live goods that are regionally selected and arrive in our garden centers in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, as well as parts of North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. The products arrive within just a few hours of leaving the greenhouse, never traveling more than 300 miles – often less than 50.
The company has been a leader in sustainable plant growing. They’re now entering their ninth year of producing Veriflora Certified Sustainably grown plants that meet or exceed standards for sustainable production, ecosystem protection, responsible agrochemical use, product purity and community engagement.
“A number of our sites utilize wind power and we recycle more than a half-million pounds of plastic and cardboard each year,” says Bell Nursery chief operating officer Brett Guthrie. “We hope customers will understand that when they buy a Bell-grown plant, they are getting a product that was produced thoughtfully and with our communities in mind.”
In 2014, Bell became the first national grower to eliminate neoniconitoid insecticides from its operations. The Home Depot has also committed to discontinue the use of neonicotinoids by the end of this year, and already more than 80% of our flowering plants are not treated with the pesticides.
This weekend, shop your local Home Depot Garden Center and feel good about a gift that shows mom you care about her and Mother Earth!
