DIY IN THE KITCHEN: COOKING WITH POWER AT THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS

September 29, 2014

What do Husky putty knives, Ryobi drills and chocolate have in common? They’re the winning combination for building prize-worthy cookies, of course.

After years of involvement with the State Fair of Texas, Home Depot associates from across the region joined forces to revamp a three-decade old competition kitchen used for some of the highest-stake food challenges in Texas. Once complete, the team concocted the ultimate kitchen reveal – a “Cooking with Power” kick-off competition.

“We thought the best way to celebrate the kitchen redesign was to take our tools out of context and apply their power to cooking,” said Kevin Leitz, Home Depot district manager.

The new kitchen’s first competition challenged seasoned bakers to create their best baked goods using converted power tools like drill-powered mixers and putty knife spatulas. Though Home Depot associates were confident in the unconventional cooking tools, participants were surprised by how well the portable and lightweight but powerful equipment worked in the kitchen.

Now that the winning power drill cookies have been chosen, the first-class kitchen is ready for this year’s competitions and demonstrations.

“If you can think of a food, there is a competition for it at the State Fair of Texas,” said Leitz. “We’re excited for the new cooking competition space, but our presence is not limited to the kitchen. Home Depot workshops and clinics will touch across all areas of the fair, from fruit and pollinator gardens to water conservation and do-it-herself workshops.”
