4 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT OUR STUDENT ASSOCIATES

February 17, 2015

As Darrian Moore rings up your purchase at store #0111 in Marietta, Ga., you may not think about her life beyond the register. But, after hours, Darrian is a college student working to achieve her professional dreams.

Our stores across the country are home to hundreds of students just like Darrian balancing a Home Depot career with the demands of student life. So, what else don’t you know about our student associates?

1. They have ambition in and outside of the aisle. Darrian at register working at The Home Depot

Like many of our student associates, Darrian is working hard for her future. Not only was she recently promoted to head cashier in the store, but she’s also dedicated to earning her degree, something her parents didn’t have the opportunity to accomplish. She’s on the path to working in early childhood education and is determined to make a difference as a special education teacher.

2. They have unique backgrounds that fuel their passions for the future.

Darrian’s passion outside the store is driven by the handicap of her cousin, who gave her the inspiration to pursue a career in special education. “My cousin has Down Syndrome, and growing up with her has helped me to realize my passion for special needs children,” said Darrian. “I want to be the person that takes the time to help them grow and make sure they’re getting exactly what they need.”

3. Skills they learn in the store translate to their future professions.

Though her previous work experience was almost exclusively in preschools and day care facilities, Darrian decided to step out of her comfort zone to try something new in retail. “I had never worked in a store before Home Depot, but I’m amazed by all of the different skill sets I’ve learned here that will have a big impact on my future. Everything from time management and leadership skills to working with different personalities and decision making – I’ve had a chance to experience it all.”

4. They juggle a challenging schedule.

Based on Darrian’s positive attitude and enthusiasm, you would never know that she balances a full-time job with a demanding class load. Squeezing in study sessions before work, during breaks and after hours, she takes courses on her off days and never misses a beat at work or in the classroom.
