Across Dallas, Austin, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, The Home Depot Foundation and Team Depot, our associate volunteer force, recently mobilized to honor our nation’s heroes and combat veteran homelessness. Through a series of large-scale renovation projects, hundreds of volunteers worked alongside nonprofit partners to improve veteran housing, expand community resources, and provide critical support for veterans transitioning out of homelessness and into independent living.
Dallas: Expanding the Veterans Resource Center
In Dallas, nearly 500 volunteers joined forces with Homeless Veterans Services of Dallas (HVSD) to renovate the Veterans Resource Center, a vital facility serving homeless and at-risk veterans in North Texas. Over the course of a single morning, the team completed a massive overhaul to expand the facility's reach and functionality.
- Key Upgrades: Volunteers painted the facility, enhanced outdoor community spaces, and created new gathering areas.
- Workforce Development: Team Depot outfitted a new welding and plumbing classroom, enabling the center to expand its skilled trades training programs for veterans entering the workforce.
- Custom Builds: Associates also built furniture and bicycles to be delivered to local veteran-service organizations.
“When the community comes together to do something for the most noble of citizens who represent the United States like our veterans, it doesn’t get any better.” — Dr. Jamie Park, Deputy Network Director, Veterans Health Administration
Phoenix: A Multi-Site Transformation for Veteran Care
In Phoenix, more than 700 volunteers partnered with U.S.VETS, the Arizona State Veterans Home, and HandsOn Greater Phoenix for a massive multi-site day of service.
- Healthcare Improvements: At the Arizona State Veterans Home, teams refreshed resident rooms, staff lounges, and recreational therapy spaces to better serve geriatric and chronically ill veterans.
- Recreational Spaces: Volunteers converted a dilapidated pool into a brand-new recreation and therapy space.
- Outdoor Amenities: The project included the construction of a new dog park, shade structures, playhouses for veteran families, and custom murals to create a welcoming environment.
- Steele Indian School Park: Enhancements were also made to the surrounding park, benefitting the broader community and first responder families.
Austin: Building Community at Pecan Springs Commons
Team Depot’s mission continued in Austin, where 400 volunteers completed a large-scale renovation of Pecan Springs Commons, an affordable housing apartment complex managed by the nonprofit Green Doors.
- Housing Upgrades: Volunteers renovated and painted eight apartment buildings, providing full furnishings for two buildings for incoming, formerly homeless residents.
- New Resources: The team constructed a new food pantry and a laundry facility to support the complex’s 60+ veteran residents.
- Community & Wellness: To foster connection, associates installed vegetable beds, fruit trees, and gardens, and even renovated the community’s playground.
“It's not just the physical structures... it’s how it transforms our community.” — Christa Noland, Executive Director, Green Doors
