Rallying Around Our Own: The Power of The Homer Fund

March 05, 2026

"Nobody plans for anything like that to happen."

For the family of Home Depot associate Aida, a normal day turned into a life-altering event that shook their entire household—both at home and at work. Since Aida, her husband, and their daughter all work for The Home Depot, the orange apron represents more than just a job; it is a shared family identity.

"I remember my dad opened the door to my room and he's like, your mom just had a car crash," her daughter recalls. The accident left Aida with a broken vertebra and in a coma for eight days, an agonizing period of uncertainty for her loved ones. The emotional toll was immense, but for a family so deeply rooted in the same company, the impact was felt across their entire community. The crisis was soon followed by mounting financial pressure. "You'd never think something like that would happen," Aida's daughter said.

Team Spirit Turns Challenges Into Hope

While Aida faced the grueling reality of having to relearn how to walk, her family was suddenly burdened with mounting hospital bills and the looming threat of an unpaid mortgage. Since Aida was unable to work, the family braced themselves for the inevitable financial breaking point.

That is when The Homer Fund stepped in to help. Thanks to the Fund, the Home Depot team came together to support her family during their darkest hour. As one colleague noted, having this assistance available is a true blessing, because nobody ever plans such devastating events to happen.

Resilience, Recovery, and the Strength of Support

The annual "Orange at Heart" fundraising campaign celebrates how Home Depot associates come together as one team. They rally to achieve the winning goal of taking care of one another during tough times. "We came together as we always do," a colleague shared. "I felt just grateful and blessed to have something like this available to help Aida and her family because nobody plans for anything like that to happen." The assistance provided to Aida’s family covered essential expenses, preventing a single unexpected event from spiraling into a devastating financial crisis. This support allowed the family to focus on what mattered most: Aida’s recovery.

Pitching In: How Associates Champion the Cause

Every dollar donated by an associate to The Homer Fund goes directly back to help a colleague in need through the Direct Grant and Matching Grant programs. During The Homer Fund’s annual fundraising campaign, Orange at Heart, associates can show their team spirit in several easy ways:

  • Purchasing gear
  • Payroll donations
  • Local fundraising events

The Homer Fund is a true team effort. When everyone pitches in, the whole team wins by reducing the financial worry and burden their colleagues face during life's toughest moments.
