Relief Efforts Underway for Homeowners Hit by Floods

June 05, 2015

After floodwaters devastated areas across Texas and Oklahoma, communities are rummaging through debris and damage to embark on the challenge of cleaning and rebuilding.

“It’s hard to describe how significantly this storm has impacted people’s lives,” said Janet Shipman, Home Depot district human resource manager in Austin, Texas. “You see homes where debris from the river is slung all over the place and mud is caked onto the walls – others where all that is left of the home is a slab. There’s just so much to be done.”

Homeowners in areas like Wimberley, Houston, San Marcos and Blanco, Texas were caught off guard by the volume and sheer force of flooding that overtook their neighborhoods. With many in these areas unsure of their next step, volunteers are playing a huge role in providing relief.

Groups of volunteers from local Home Depot stores have been out each day to help get these communities back on their feet. From pulling out sheet rock and insulation to scrubbing down furniture and walls, this army of orange shirts is coming together from areas like San Antonio and Austin to get their hands dirty and give back to homeowners in need.
