‘A Different World’ Cast Celebrates The Home Depot’s HBCU-Grant Winners

Several HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) received over $350,000 this week in Home Depot grants. The winners also received a special treat, meeting with cast members from the 90s sitcom, A Different World.

Darryl BellCree Summer, Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy, reunited to celebrate with representatives from nine HBCUs. A Different World ran for six seasons, centering around characters who attended a fictional, historically black college. At the event, the actors discussed the impact of the show and the fans who were inspired to attend HBCUs.

The awarded grants are part of The Home Depot’s campus improvement program, Retool Your School, an initiative aimed at giving back to our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by facilitating updates to campuses. 

2018 Winners:

Cluster 1: > 4,000 students

  • $50K Jackson State University
  • $40K Southern University
  • $30K Fayetteville State University

Cluster 2: 1,201 – 3,999 students

  • $50K Tuskegee University
  • $40K University of Arkansas Pine Bluff
  • $30K Clafin University

Cluster 3: < 1,200 students

  • $50K Lane College
  • $40K Talladega College
  • $30K Livingstone College

Since its inception in 2011, the Retool Your School has awarded $1.8 million through 490 grants. It supports a variety of projects for different schools, each one instilling a sense of ownership and community for those involved.
