HOME DEPOT REMOVES EPS STYROFOAM FROM HOLIDAY PACKAGING

October 12, 2017

During the holiday season, as gifts are exchanged and online gifting continues to rise, 25 percent more trash is thrown away—much of it containing expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam packaging, commonly referred to as styrofoam.

EPS foam contains beads of chemicals and oil and while it protects packages from breaking, and can be difficult to recycle depending on what municipal recycling services are available. In fact, EPS foam can take more than 500 years to even begin to biodegrade.

Our packaging team found a way to replace EPS foam in our private-label holiday product assortment with recyclable materials like molded pulp and paper.

With this step away from EPS foam, we were able to eliminate 341,000 cubic feet of it from our packaging. That’s 355 Greyhound buses-worth of non-recyclable foam kept out of our remaining landfills and waterways.
