Meet the Voice of The Home Depot: Q&A with Actor Josh Lucas

June 22, 2026

Since 2013, actor Josh Lucas has provided the voiceover for The Home Depot's national advertising campaigns. Now, for the first time in his 13-year tenure, Lucas is stepping out of the recording booth and in front of the camera. In a new commercial celebrating the FIFA World Cup 2026, The Home Depot is putting a face to the voice, pairing the actor with global soccer legend David Beckham.

We sat down with Lucas to discuss his 13-year journey with the company, his real-life obsession with heavy-duty DIYing, what it's like hanging out with David Beckham, and the Home Depot associates who help him get his own projects done.

The Origin of the Voice: "Recognizably Unrecognizable"

How did you originally become the voice of The Home Depot? Did you have any idea that you would still be working with the brand 13 years later?

Josh Lucas: "Around the exact time my son was born, I got asked to audition to be the new voice. It was a wide search, I was told. The great actors Gene Hackman and Ed Harris had previously been the voice.

I am told many actors like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, etc., were considered, but that they landed on me because my voice was the most 'recognizably unrecognizable' voice—meaning when you heard it, you thought, 'I know that voice,' but couldn’t quite connect my face or name to it. It made you think, 'Whose voice is that?' Also, I was told the wife of the creator of the campaign was a big fan of Sweet Home Alabama.

Honestly, if I’d had the job for one year, I would have been thrilled. 13 years was incomprehensible. I’m told it’s one of the longest corporate VO [voiceover] jobs in history."

From the Recording Booth to the Store Aisles

It sounds like you get recognized in Home Depot stores quite a bit. Any specific interactions with associates or customers that have stood out to you?

Josh Lucas: "I mostly go to the Oxnard [California] location these days, and Ron, who’s a retired train conductor and strong like an ox, helps me often. He does a lot of big DIY projects himself, and we often have to load heavy pallets of cement blocks or railroad ties into my truck. Ron’s cool because he’s always 'training' the younger associates while we work—like how to use the forklift to maneuver odd shapes into my truck, etc.

Also, I love this guy Oscar who works at the pro desk. He’s helped a lot with big orders I’ve needed delivered."

After more than a decade as the voice of The Home Depot, what finally made this the right moment to step in front of the camera? How did it feel?

Josh Lucas: "I would have stepped in front of the camera at any point over the last decade, as I love this job and this company. I truly go there many times a week, as I was working on a renovation in Harlem when I started this job and now I'm building a home in California. I feel truly honored to represent a company I care about and believe in."

You mentioned visiting Home Depot multiple times a week. What about the experience keeps bringing you back?

Josh Lucas: "I now really know the stores. I know the products. I use a huge amount of Milwaukee tools. I have literally dozens of batteries charging and Milwaukee tools I’m using every day.

I plant a lot and use the Garden Center weekly for supplies and plants—even trees. I know the deals and best times of years to—let’s say—buy lavender in bulk. Literally sometimes 100 plants at a time. When the great Milwaukee 'buy this tool, get this tool free' deals happen, I’m all over it. Honestly, if I have time to kill, I just sometimes go wander the aisles and come up with project ideas."

A Real-Life Doer: Josh's Approach to DIY

You’ve shared that you come from a family of builders. How has that shaped the kind of DIYer that you are and your approach to projects?

Josh Lucas: "I take on pretty much any project that I can. I use YouTube and the Home Depot online tutorials to help. But I often just buy the supplies I need at the store and just start and figure it out as I go. I can do lots of basic stuff—basic carpentry, basic plumbing, even some electrical. Anyone can paint a house, really.

I also have a tractor with an auger, forks, and other attachments, so lifting a pallet of heavy pavers or such isn’t a big deal. I really try and do as much as I can myself, partially because I live quite rural and it’s expensive and takes a lot of time to hire a plumber or such to come out."

Teaming Up with David Beckham for FIFA World Cup 2026

How was your experience working alongside David Beckham ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, a once-in-a-generation moment in sports?

Josh Lucas: "Genuinely, Beckham feels 'touched.' He’s special. He has this glint in his eye. A charmed but oddly humble, 'normal' man. Bizarre how down-to-earth he is, being the global superstar he also is. I loved working with him—I’ve always been a huge fan. I love the documentary about him.

But in person, I was surprised how personable and kind I found him. We talked about our kids a lot. We talked about the home I’m building a lot. We talked about beekeeping, as my grandfather always kept bees. I hope to get bees next, and I want to bug David about how to do it.

I’ve been teasing my son and my wife that I have a big 'man crush' on David ever since. I think they are sick of me talking about my new best friend, David Beckham! [Laughs] But truly, I cannot say more kind things about him. They say never meet your heroes, but in this case, he was better than I could have imagined."

If you were designing your own ultimate FIFA World Cup watch party backyard setup, what would it include?

Josh Lucas: "The one I’m actually building! A big deck surrounded by lots of lavender, bougainvillea, and olive trees—all of which I purchased at The Home Depot. Most was small, 1-quart or 1-gallon size when I bought it, but now it’s getting big.

I use a lot of Hampton Bay solar and low-voltage lights, a big outdoor TV, and lots of friends hanging out cheering... dreamy!"

  • Favorite Home Depot product and/or service?

"Again, we are deep in on the Milwaukee cordless tools... but I also had The Home Depot come install a mini-split AC unit in my garage and it’s great—literally changed my life."
