Housing Impact Grants

Giving back is a core value of The Home Depot. Through our investments over the years, we have been proud to stand side-by-side with our neighbors in communities across North America.

The Home Depot has aligned its online grants program with The Home Depot Foundation’s Affordable Housing Built Responsibly program and is focused exclusively on housing. We believe that helping families and individuals secure quality affordable housing creates stronger communities. The Housing Impact Grants program supports affordable housing projects built or preserved with environmentally friendly, efficient and durable materials that increase energy and water efficiency, improve indoor air quality, and reduce maintenance costs.

How to Apply

The Home Depot supports 501(c)(3) tax exempt nonprofit organizations in the United States and organizations with registered status in Canada.  To maximize the impact of resources, The Home Depot only funds organizations and programs that meet our eligibility criteria and pass the online eligibility quiz.  Grants range between $500 and $3,000.  Preference will be given to requests that engage community stakeholders and result in building or rebuilding houses and/or apartments that are affordable to individuals/families earning a modest income (typically 80 percent or less of the area median income).

Criteria

The Home Depot’s Housing Impact Grants program funds nonprofit organizations whose affordable housing projects, whether rental or homeownership, meet one or more of the following building/rebuilding criteria:

  • Completes required maintenance or repair of a home occupied by a family/individual earning 80 percent or less of area median income

  • Increases energy efficiency and/or conserves water

  • Reduces maintenance costs using durable materials

  • Improves indoor air quality

  • Uses environmentally friendly building materials

  • Designs and installs landscaping features such as trees and shrubs to reduce home energy costs, minimize demand for water and synthetic chemicals and reduce heat island effect

  • Upgrades a house to achieve a local, regional, or national green building standard such as EnergyStar ®, LEED for Homes, EarthCraft, Earth Advantage, etc.

All nonprofit organizations requesting support from The Home Depot are required to have proper tax exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service.

In order to access the application, an applicant must pass the Eligibility Quiz.  This short quiz assesses whether a request meets the grant criteria and prevents an applicant from dedicating the time and effort to complete a full application when the request does not meet the requirement for grants.  Passing the Eligibility Quiz does not ensure that a grant will be awarded.

Applicants who pass the Eligibility Quiz must then complete and submit the entire application.  All eligible requests will be reviewed, and applicants will be notified in writing by e-mail whether they will receive funding.  Due to the high volume of requests received, not every request that matches the Housing Impact Grants guidelines will receive funding.  Approved applicants are required to complete a detailed grant report within 30 days after project completion.  Failure to complete the report will suspend an organization’s eligibility for future funding from any grants program from The Home Depot .
