Frequently Asked Questions
Gifts In Kind International and The Home Depot in early 2008 launched Framing
Hope—a community product donation program for nonprofit organizations
throughout the U.S. Each The Home Depot store in the U.S. is invited to select
a local, community-based non-profit to begin receiving home improvement
products and building supplies no longer available for sale in our stores.
Selected non-profits must complete a screening process, after which they are
matched with a local store, and will be able to begin picking up the donated
items from their partner stores.
About the Program
Q: Who is Gifts In Kind International and how are they involved?
A: Gifts In Kind International (
www.giftsinkind.org) was selected by The Home Depot to manage Framing
Hope—The Home Depot Community Product Donation Program. The eighth largest
charity in the country, Gifts In Kind International works with half of the
Fortune 100 companies to distribute new product donations to community
nonprofits around the world that are working to enhance, empower and restore
communities and people in need. With more than 150,000 partner nonprofit
organizations, Gifts In Kind improves the lives of 13 million people each
year.
Q: What kind of items will be donated from participating The Home Depot
stores?
A: The items available for donation may include building supplies and
materials, plumbing products and assorted home improvement and cleaning items.
Specific items, including quantity, type and/or assortment CANNOT be
guaranteed. Paint and other chemicals, ladders, Hazmat materials, fire
extinguishers, returned electronics and chainsaws will NOT be included in the
donations.
Q: How long does the program last?
A: Selected nonprofits agree to participate in the program for at least one
year. Nonprofits can sign up to participate again toward the end of the
yearlong partnership. Gifts In Kind will match partners on a 12-month basis.
Q: Approximately how much product will be donated in the course of the
12-month period?
A: There is no guarantee as to the volume or frequency of the donations,
though it is expected to be substantial and best intended for large,
established nonprofits who can handle some inventory.
Q: Which The Home Depot stores are participating in the program?
A: Stores throughout the U.S. are participating in the donation program. Any
nonprofit organization interested in participating must register for the
program through Gifts In Kind International at www.giftsinkind.org/HomeDepot
or 1-800-580-4454. Any inquiries made in our stores will be deferred to Gifts
In Kind International for the screening process.
Q: Which organizations can participate in the program?
A: Nonprofit organizations that are designated as tax-exempt under Rule 501
(c)(3) by the Internal Revenue Service in the United States are eligible to
apply. The nature of the donations would be best suited for nonprofits that
are working in home and shelter rehab, or building and maintenance. Community
nonprofits that supply building and home improvement materials to the poor and
needy are also eligible.
Q: What if my nonprofit organization has already been receiving donations
from its local The Home Depot store?
A: All charities participating in this program must complete the selection
process. Our store managers are encouraged to nominate local charities they
already have a relationship with, but all donations through this program must
meet the guidelines and criteria for participation .
Q: When will the program begin?
A: Gifts In Kind International is currently matching The Home Depot stores
with nonprofit partners. The donation program will be launched across the
country in 2008 by geographic region. Registration is currently open for all
regions; stores are matched on a first-come, first-served basis.
